negative space

Space of the body interests me as much as its structure. There is meaning in the amount and location of space around and within the body. We have knowledge of bodily spaces—understanding of the vulnerability between the legs and under the arms, incredible consciousness between the toes when a grain of sand is stuck there.

The awareness of these spaces, however, is greater than their actual physical space. In order to emphasize spaces of the body, to allow them to be as visually important as they are significant in awareness, surrounding positive forms accommodate through distortion and simplification.

Both distortion of form and emphasis of space in the figure are clearly present in children’s drawings. This association with the naive brings humor to seriousness and innocence to mature content.
